Santa Claws on Hampstead Heath?
Proof that it really is nippy in the Men’s Ponds.
I assume these remains found on the jetty of the Men’s Pond today are of the invasive American crayfish rather than the native version, Austropotamobius pallipes.
These beasts have struck out at swimmers in the past, but this one appears to have been a meal for one of the gulls. Or perhaps someone’s been picnicking?
Environmentalist George Monbiot had a brilliant idea for hunting these creatures with bicycle wheels. Not only would it keep a pest down but provide rather splendid fare.
