The Fall

This is the time when the temperature falls, the leaves come later.

As I swam this lunchtime I realised that it was the same time of day as when, a dozen years ago, I was sitting in a near-deserted Channel 4 Newsroom eating my sandwiches.

Back in 2001 I watched the TV monitor on my desk as the news channel started showing footage of a plane crashing into a tower in Manhattan.

By the time I had rung the editor on his mobile and told the team to get back from the greasy spoon next door, another plane had flown into the other tower.
