First time back on the Heath after almost a month away and it is exactly the day when the season turns.

Just a few of the early trees like chestnuts and sycamore have started yellowing. But it’s the conkers that you kick as you run that give the lie to the still-verdant heath.

The water is a fresh 16 degrees, my favourite temperature. Summer’s truly gone.
