It’s a scene from a Constable painting. A hazy autumnal day, with billowing clouds and some rustics gathering hay. A 21st century Hay Wain

In fact, these are Hampstead Heath workers cutting grass and struggling somewhat to bale it. It seems a bit late in the season for haymaking and I’m not sure what they are going to do with it. In the absence of any Corporation cattle perhaps it’s going to go on feeding pet hamsters and rabbits across north London?

But Constable isn’t inappropriate. He painted Hampstead Heath as much as rural Suffolk. And despite the City towers on the horizon this still feels like fields, not a park.
